Ancient Greeks Measured Earth With a Stick

More than two thousand years ago, a man measured the size of the Earth without leaving the country he lived in, without instruments, and without ever seeing the shape he was measuring.

He used a stick, a shadow, a distance somebody had walked, and one very clever assumption.

His answer was stunningly close. How close depends on a unit nobody today can pin down exactly, which is a story in itself.
